Marmara University

The roots of Marmara University in the field of education date back to January 16, 1883, when it was established behind the Istanbul Girls' High School in Cagaloglu. It started as the "Hamidiye School of Commerce" under the Ministry of Mining, Agriculture, and Forestry.

It was affiliated with the Ministry of Education on September 21, 1889, closed for reforms in 1893, and reopened on October 15, 1897. It became the Istanbul Academy of Economics and Commercial Sciences in 1959 and finally Marmara University in 1983.

Today, it is the second-largest public university in Turkey with 60,000 students, 2,839 staff, and offers programs in five languages: Turkish, French, English, German, and Arabic.

Notable alumni include President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In 2005, Gerhard Schröder received an honorary doctorate. Current rector: Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Arat.
