Mehmet Akif Ersoy University is a public university located in Burdur. It was founded on March 1, 2006. It was established by merging several faculties and institutes from Akdeniz and Süleyman Demirel Universities, some of which were founded in 1982.
The university was named after the Ottoman Turkish poet and writer Mehmet Akif Ersoy, who was born in Istanbul on December 20, 1873. He studied Hadith, memorized the Quran, and learned Arabic, Persian, and French. He is also the writer of the Turkish national anthem and the Independence Anthem, which was approved by the Turkish Parliament in 1921 and has been sung by millions of Turks for nearly ninety years. He passed away on December 23, 1936.
